Stop what you’re doing and read because this is good news for gamers across the entire globe. A university in the state of Kentucky has officially stated that they are offering 20 scholarships for students who play League of Legends. The plans are set to begin in Fall 2015.
The University of Pikeville’s new Media Director, Bruce Parson, believes it is only a matter of time before other universities begin following in the same steps. The university hopes the program will draw prospective students, international and national, who would have not considered U-Pike as their alma mater.
Bruce Parson says the gamers will be considered equivalent to athletes who play basketball or other traditional sports. The students given the scholarships will be held to the same academic standards as any other scholarship student.
The scholarships given out by the University of Pikeville will only cover half of the student’s tuition, however. So this begs the question of whether or not gaming scholarships are really equal in terms of tuition coverage in comparsion to traditional athletic ones.
