This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

At the beginning of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you’re asked which item you’d bring with you to a deserted island. You might be wondering what impact that choice actually has once you get settled into your new home, but it’s actually much simpler than you think.

Here’s what you need to know about that fateful choice you made at the beginning of the game.

What Does The “One Thing You’d Bring With You” Mean in Animal Crossing New Horizons?

In your first few moments in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you’ll get to meet Timmy and Tommy, the close relatives (presumably, the sons) of Tom Nook, everybody’s most hated video game landlord.

They’ll ask you a few questions, including your name, your birthdate, and, evidently, the one thing you’d most likely bring to an abandoned island. The selections that are presented to you go as follows:

  • “A sleeping bag”
  • “A lamp”
  • “Some food”
  • “Something to kill time”

You can choose anything at this point, but it actually won’t matter. Once you get slightly into the first section of the game, after you’ve been greeted by Tom Nook and the other villagers, you’ll receive all of these items as a welcoming gift, regardless of your choice.

Once you’ve picked up all of your gifts, make sure to arrange them in your tent the way you’d like them to look.

And don’t worry about the tiny space you’re given at this point; you’ll be able to upgrade to a house fairly soon! You just have to complete Tom Nook’s first task by accumulating 5000 Miles by any means.

That’s what you need to know about the first big choice you make in New Horizons, and be sure to check out our growing collection of Animal Crossing: New Horizons guides for more tips and tricks, including:
