Ark Survival Ascended: How to Turn Off Clouds and Fog

Clouds and fog add a bit of realism, as well as difficulty, when exploring the Island in Ark: Survival Ascended. If you don’t like them, or are looking for a processing boost, here’s how to turn off clouds and fog in ASA.

How to Disable Clouds and Fog in Ark: Survival Ascended

FPS has been an issue for some fans of the dinosaur crafting survival game. Whether it’s a dip when fighting or generally unimpressive gameplay, there are some ways to boost your FPS. Specifically, you can disable the environmental additions of clouds and fog. Who needs puffy sky cotton anyways?

However, turning off these features isn’t as straightforward as going to your Display Settings. After repeatedly scrolling through the options, I felt like I was going crazy not being able to figure out how to get rid of them. Thankfully, console commands can help disable clouds and fog to help your FPS in ASA.

How Disable Clouds and Fog Using a Console Command

Open the command console with the tilde (~) key, then using the following commands:

• To turn off clouds you want to use the command r.VolumetricCloud 0.
• You use the same command for Fog, replacing the Cloud portion, r.VolumetricFog 0.

If you’re turning them off due to performance, disabling clouds will provide the biggest boost. Those struggling to even play the game may find themselves able to enjoy it, as some are seeing a 5-10 FPS increase.

You can always change your mind later on if your rig gets an update, performance in ASA is optimized, or you just miss foggy mornings. To turn clouds or fog back on, use the same code to disable them, but change the 0 to a 1. This says to the game you want overcast days back in your life.
