Baldur’s Gate 3: Can You Change Your Race?

Unhappy with your racial abilities or cosmetic choices? You might be wondering if you can change race in Baldur's Gate 3.

In Baldur’s Gate 3 and other RPGs, the option to respec your character and change their appearance is an important element of customization. You might pick a class, feat, or race at first and then decide you want to change these elements later. When it comes to your character’s lineage specifically, there are plenty of options. But can you change your race in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Can You Change Your Race in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Since Baldur’s Gate 3 has numerous racial options, you might have wondered if it was possible to change your race outside of character creation. Unfortunately, while the option to respec your class is possible through Withers, you can’t change your character race in Baldur’s Gate 3 as of yet.

Technically. For now, this is the domain of mods, and an official way to change race isn’t available. That said, you can change your appearance in some of the various following ways:

  • The Magic Mirror can change how your character looks like.
  • The Disguise Self and similar spells temporarily change your appearance.
  • The Mask of the Shapeshifter allows you to shift forms.

The most effective option is definitely the Magic Mirror, as its changes are not temporary, and you can use it as many times as you want.

How to Use the Magic Mirror to Change Your Appearance

The Magic Mirror was introduced in Baldur’s Gate 3 Update 3, and it allows you to essentially go back to the cosmetic part of character creation.

It’s located in your camp, but depending on your progress through the game, it can be in different places. You will have to explore a bit, but it should be quite easy to find as it looks like a large glowing mirror.

Interacting with it will allow you to change your appearance, voice, pronouns, etc. While it is highly useful in picking out a new look for your character, it has a few limitations:

  • You can’t change your race/subrace.
  • You can’t change your body type.
  • You can’t change the physical consequences of your story choices (e.g., A missing eye).

On the bright side, you can use it at any time and for as many times as you like without cost.

That answers the question: Can you change your race in Baldur’s Gate 3? Many unique abilities are tied to your racial choice. That said, mods that allow you to do this might appear in the future.
