Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Change Class

It’s very possible you’ll want to change class in Baldur’s Gate 3 at some point, either because you would prefer your character play differently or for roleplaying reasons. You can unlock the ability to class change relatively early in the game, but you’ll first have to release Withers from his sarcophagus. In this guide we’ll go over how to change class in Baldur’s Gate 3, including where you can find Withers.

How to Change Class in Baldur’s Gate 3

• You’ll need to find and release an NPC named Withers in order to unlock changing classes.
• Once he’s been released, Withers can be found at camp.
• It costs 100 gold to swap classes.

You’re going to do a little ruin diving to find Withers in Baldur’s Gate 3, but first you’ve got to get there. Head to the section of the map marked on the map below, which isn’t too far off from where you start on the beach.

You’ll have to intimidate or otherwise persuade the thieves outside to move along (I can’t remember the exact dialogue options, honestly!), and then go through a nearby door into the ruins by any means necessary. Note that you’ll enter a combat encounter as soon as you get through the door.

There will be a few encounters inside the ruins, and one trap room you’ll need to be prepared for. This segment of the game taught me that enemy spawns are not static between playthroughs. In the case of these ruins, the placement of enemies after the first encounter has been different between all three times I’ve gone through them on a fresh character.

How to Get by the Sarcophagus Trap

Within these ruins is a room full of traps, with a large sarcophagus in the middle of the room. Interacting with the sarcophagus will trigger fire arrow traps on either side of the room, and will immediately switch your party to Turn-based Mode. Do not trigger this trap with your entire party in tow, and be careful not to trigger the grease trap in the room’s entrance.

In the room just before the sarcophagus trap, click the bone icon beneath your party list on the left side of the screen to toggle off Group Mode. Choose a single character you feel you can confidently escape the room with in one turn, and have them head into the room and interact with the trap.

After you trigger the trap and Turn-based Mode initiates, loot the sarcophagus to get a key, and then pop Dash to run back to the last room where you left the rest of your party. Avoiding triggering that grease trap at the entrance limits the spread of the fire, and you should come out of it without incurring too much damage. Once you’re home free, click the icon next to the End Turn icon to turn off Turn-based Mode.

Where Is Withers?

The room opposite of the sarcophagus trap room can be opened with the key you just got. There isn’t much to note in this room, but you’re looking for something specific: a button, located on a wall behind and to the left of the statue. Your party will make a Perception check on approach. Press the button to unlock the door and initiate another combat encounter. Once you’ve cleared the room of enemies, you can interact with the sarcophagus in the room you unlocked to first meet Withers.

Where to Go to Change Classes

Once you’ve met Withers, you’re free to your class whenever you like. All you have to do is take a Long Rest, and look for him to talk to. After having a short chat, he’ll offer to change your class for a mere 100 gold. You’ll be starting this new class at level 1, so any level progress you’ve made so far will have to be worked back up.

It’s very possible to miss the ruins and Withers when you set forth on your adventure, but it serves as a functional reminder to keep your eyes peeled and to look all around for new opportunities.
