Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Fly (BG3)

Ignore terrain and reach treasures you normally can't by learning how to fly in Baldur's Gate 3.

Learning how to fly in Baldur’s Gate 3 can give you a tactical advantage in combat. It can also help you reach out-of-the-way locations and grab items that are difficult to reach. While there aren’t any hard and fast rules for soaring around the skies in D&D, there are some things you’ll have to consider in BG3. Here’s what you need to know about getting the ability and using it.

How to Fly in Baldur’s Gate 3

To fly, you must learn the Fly spell. There are multiple ways to do so, but the easiest one to get is the School of Transmutation Level 3 Fly spell.

The ability lets you ignore terrain. You can go to the top of rocky areas to loot chests or gain the high ground for ranged attacks in combat. This incantation can be cast on yourself or an ally within melee range. It requires Concentration and lasts up to 10 turns.

How to Get the Fly Spell in BG3

Flying is magic reserved for the Sorcerer, Warlock, or Wizard classes. Circle of the Land Druids can also learn it if you choose Mountain as a passive feature when you hit Level 5.

How to Get It as a Support Action

The ability to glide around can also be unlocked through using and improving your Illithid powers. If you allow yourself to receive the Astral-Touched Tadpole, you’ll be able to choose from a new set of high-level Illithid powers that include Fly as a support action. Unlike the Level 3 spell, this version doesn’t cost a slot.

How to Get a Potion of Flying

Your third option is to use a Potion of Flying. This gives you a movement speed of 60 feet for an hour. This recipe requires a Sublimate of Eagle Feathers and any Suspension to craft, and you’ll learn the recipe when you first extract a Sublimate of Eagle Feathers. If you have the Digital Deluxe edition of Baldur’s Gate 3, this potion is included in the bonuses.

After you learn how to fly in Baldur’s Gate 3, it acts like the Jump action rather than allowing you to choose elevation, which is a feature I hope to see in the future. Until then, check out more BG3 guides like if you should use Illithid powers and how to make health potions.
