Between your Tav, six origin characters, 12 hirelings, and various side and temporary companions, it can be hard to decide who to bring to your adventure. Luckily, you can easily remove party members and recruit them again. I’ll tell you how to remove party members in Baldur’s Gate 3.
How to Get Rid of Party Members in Baldur’s Gate 3
Dead party members can’t be removed from the party. They must be revived first. Origin characters, companions, and Hirelings can be removed anytime through a dialogue option. Multiplayer characters stuck in your campaign are a whole other issue.
For the most part, you can remove party members in Baldur’s Gate 3 for free through dialogue. However, Origin characters you’ve traveeled with may grumble about it. Kick someone out of the party if you want to add a Hireling, replace an Origin character with another companion like Halsin, or have a friend join you when you have a full party of four.
How to Remove Origin Characters from Your Party
You can get rid of Origin characters in Baldur’s Gate 3 by conversing with them in or outside of camp and choosing the “stay in camp” option. This removes them from the party, but not permanently. If you want them back, go to camp. Tell them to join you again if your party isn’t full. I found out the hard way you can’t do this in danger zones where the map glows red.
Removing Hirelings from Your Party
Hirelings cost a little money to recruit, but you can remove them for free. Find your Hireling(s) walking around camp and talk to them to dismiss them from your party. They return to the Fugue Plane they came from and don’t take up a party slot any longer. That said, you must spend the 100 gold to recruit them again if you choose to do so.
Hireling gear goes back to your inventory, but you have to unequip any gear they’re carrying on them. They keep it if you dismiss them. If you made a mistake and forgot to do this, don’t worry: they’ll still be wearing that piece of gear on them when you recruit them again.
Removing Dead Characters from Your Party
You can’t get rid of a dead character in Baldur’s Gate 3, but you can dismiss them after they’ve been resurrected. You can revive them yourself with a Scroll of Resurrection or the Revivify spell or talk to Withers at camp to revive them for 200 gold. After they’re alive again, you can dismiss them, provided the character isn’t a multiplayer addition.
How to Kick Multiplayer Characters from Your Party
So, here’s the bad news: There’s no way to kick multiplayer characters from your party in Baldur’s Gate 3. Once another player joins your campaign, you’re stuck with their character the entire playthrough. You can’t even talk to them at camp. This is honestly a big issue, one that either needs to be sorted by Larian or the modding community. At the time of writing, there are no mods to remove multiplayer characters from single-player.
That’s all you need to know about how to remove party members in Baldur’s Gate 3. It’s not entirely obvious that you’ll need to resurrect someone before the Baldurs Gate 3 remove party member option becomes available, nor that you can resurrect them at Withers.
