Knowing how to rest in Baldur’s Gate 3 is incredibly important. You’ll need to know the difference between Short Rest vs. Long Rest and how each can have drastic implications for your party. Each provides its own unique benefit, and one can only be done with a certain number of items. By relaxing in your camp, you’ll keep characters in tip-top shape, all while discovering new insights.
How to Rest in Baldur’s Gate 3
Here’s how to rest in Baldur’s Gate 3. To perform a Short Rest, press the campfire icon in the lower-right of the action bar, then the top button with two blue dots that appears. To do a Long Rest, press the campfire button, then press the crescent moon bottom button that appears.
Short Rest vs Long Rest in Baldur’s Gate 3: What’s the Difference and When Should You use Them?
Now that you know how to rest, what’s the difference between Short Rest vs Long Rest in BG3? Both options provide different effects and prove useful at different times. A Short Rest heals a bit of HP, refreshes Warlock spell slots, and refreshes various class actions that require a Short Rest. This can only be done twice per day. A Long Rest brings you to your camp (the camp can also be accessed by opening your map with the and selecting it via the sidebar. However, there’s a lot more that a Long Rest does.
Keep in mind that as of Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 6, “if you Long Rest with only alcohol as camp supplies, you will now get the new Hungover condition for 10 turns.” The update also tweaked some other portions of resting at camp, specifically around supplies.
- “Auto-selecting your camp supplies before a Long Rest will use resources more optimally — sometimes you just don’t feel like cooking.”
- “The Long Rest camp supply menu is now better at pulling supplies from inside containers in companion inventories. Stop hoarding the cheese, Wyll.”
- “As a quality-of-life improvement, the Pact Weapon condition now remains after a Long Rest.”
- “Made it possible to dismiss party members during camp nights. Also made it possible to recruit hirelings to a full party — they’ll hang around at camp until you need them.”
Long Rest Detailed: Sleeping in Camp, Partial Rest, and Party Interactions
The Long Rest mechanic in Baldur’s Gate 3 is also related to supplies and camp interactions. In your camp, you might see icons showing that a character wants to talk with you. Some cutscenes will also play, leading to additional dialogue options. And, naturally, there are some romance choices, too.
Generally speaking, a Long Rest requires 40 Camp Supplies and Food. You can either use a single Camp Supplies item or multiple foodstuffs. HP is fully restored, as are all spell slots and actions that require a Long Rest. The use of Illithid Wisdom in specific dialogue conversations is refreshed; I was able to use these during my playthroughs, which allowed my character to be considered a True Soul.
Dreamlover sequences may occur. I find that this is a neat feature, as it lets you meet the NPC you create during the “Who Do You Dream Of?” portion. Certain progression events, such as the attack on the Druid Grove, can only occur after you’ve slept. And as noted earlier, romance scenes can happen. For instance, after the raid on the Druid Grove, you can pick a partner before sleeping.
Sadly, if you don’t have 40 Camp Supplies, your party will only do a Partial Rest when you sleep. I don’t recommend this at all since it only restores a percentage of your HP. Moreover, you won’t get to refresh your Illithid Wisdom dialogue.
