What’s the Baldur’s Gate 3 max level cap? When the game released into Early Access in 2020, the highest players could go was Level 5, and that’s much lower than the cap in Dungeons & Dragons 5e, the edition of the classic RPG most similar to BG3. Thankfully, Larian Studios has confirmed an increase to the level cap for the full release, giving you more access to higher-level, powerful spells and abilities. But how high will it go?
Baldur’s Gate 3: What is the Max Level Cap? Answered
As of right now, the maximum level cap for the full release (1.0) of Baldur’s Gate 3 is Level 12. However, Larian originally planned to have the cap at Level 10, saying in an interview with Multiplayer.it that because of community feedback and the desire for “power level,” the team decided 10 levels just wasn’t enough.
We’ve changed a couple of ground rules, just to remove possible friction with multiclassing. If you know the rules of the fifth edition of Dungeons and Dragons, you will surely know that to multiclass there are stat limits that you must respect: we have removed them, there are no more stat requirements and you can make a character with multiple classes at any time. There’s even an achievement that requires you to get to Level 12 with a level in every single class. Of course, it will be very difficult for some players, but it is made possible by this removal of limits.
During the playtest we saw that many of the players eager to multiclass already had a clear build in mind to use, perhaps following the more impactful “tabletop” ones. Newbies to the game, on the other hand, usually kept the chosen class from start to finish. We designed the level up screen so as not to overemphasize the presence of multiclassing, because we realize that it is a feature mainly sought after by experienced players …
… We decided for 12 during early access because the community was clamoring for the introduction of so-called “power levels” and we felt it was important to give more levels where the player gets a “talent,” because talents really help a lot to customize your character.

Yet this still leaves the cap far below the max level of 20 in D&D. The max level cap of 12 can make multiclassing a bit difficult because you won’t be able to get the higher level abilities for your classes when you split your levels between more than one class. As a result, you’ll have to make sacrifices with the skills of one class to take levels in another class.
Even without multiclassing, this level cap won’t let you get any spells above the 6th level. This means that abilities like Plane Shift and Teleport won’t be obtainable in Baldur’s Gate 3 since they’re spells above 6th level.
Being related to Dungeons & Dragons, which receives additional content on a fairly regular basis, Baldur’s Gate 3 could end up receiving DLC in a similar manner to continue expanding the game, and that would offer an opportunity to raise the level cap. If they raised the cap once, they certainly could do it again. After all, the level cap for Baldur’s Gate 2 after all its expansions were released ended up being level 40.
