Best Gear for Gale in Baldur’s Gate 3

Here's the best Gale gear in Baldur's Gate 3.

Gale is the Wizard companion who can benefit from some spell-boosting magic items. He’ll also need some defensive gear to keep him out of danger and maintain his concentration on powerful spells. Here’s my best Gear for Gale in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Best Gale Gear in BG3

Bracers of Defense

One of the best and universally useful caster defensive items found in the early game are the Bracers of Defense. They’ll boost your AC by +2 as long as Gale isn’t wearing armor or a shield. Note that this works with the Mage Armor spell, granting you a base 15 AC plus Dexterity and other bonuses. I found it in the Necromancer’s Cellar accessible beneath the southern house in the Blighted Village. It’s the one with all the alchemy ingredients.

Pearl of Power Amulet

Even though Gale has the Wizard’s Arcane Recovery, he still needs some way to restore spell slots beside Elixirs. There are two must-have items you can find in Act 1 and Act 2 that restore your spells. The first one is the Pearl of Power Amulet, which replenishes a spent spell slot up to Level 3. I bought it from Omeluum in the Myconic Village in the Underdark.

Spellcrux Amulet

The second spell slot restoration item for Gale is the Spellcrux Amulet in Act 2. It’s drastically more powerful than the Pearl of Power because it restores spell slots up to Level 6. Furthermore, it’s a Bonus Action instead of an Action, so you can use it reliably in combat. I got it as a loot drop from the Warden in the dungeons beneath Moonrise Tower, where you rescue the Tieflings.

Cloak and Hood of the Weave

These two are must-have items for boosting your spell attack rolls and spell save DCs for powerful spells. The Cloak will give you a +1 bonus to these, as well as the Absorb Elements spell, to defend against elemental attacks. The Hood is just a more powerful +2 version of this that stacks and doesn’t provide an extra spell. Both are in Act 3, where I bought the Cloak from Helsik at the Devil’s Fee and the Hood from the Mystic Carrion at Philgrave’s Mansion.

Darkfire Shortbow or the Gontr Mael

Okay, hear me out. If no one else in your party benefits from using these two Haste spell-granting bows, put them on Gale. Both will turn Gale into an incredible blaster mage, granting him two actions for two spells per turn once you cast Haste on him from the bows. The most basic idea you can imagine is casting two Fireballs back to back, but the options skyrocket from there.

As long as you’re not casting Concentration spells that break Haste and stay out of danger, the Haste longbow strategy works wonders. I bought the Darkfire Shortbow from Dammon at the Last Light Inn in Act 2. As for Gontr Mael, it’s a drop from the Steel Watch Titan at the end of Disable the Steel Watch.

Robe of the Weave

This is my favorite chest armor piece for Gale because it not only heals you but also gives you a +2 AC that stacks with Mage Armor. It doesn’t even interfere with Braces of Defense. Furthermore, it also increases your spell attacks and DCs by +1 stacking with the Cloak and Hood of the Weave. You can easily get this with Gale by defeating Lorroakan in Ramazith’s Tower and going down to the two Globes of Invulnerability. Use See Invisibility to find the levers that disable them.

Markoheshkir

The Robe of the Wave is in one of the two Globes of Invulnerability, and in the other, you can get the best Wizard staff in the game. Markoheshkir does three things. First of all, it boosts all spells, but secondly, it allows you to cast a spell for free once per Long Rest. The third effect is also superb, allowing you to pick an element and get powerful spells of that element to cast for free once per Short Rest. It’s an incredible staff that I would recommend dual-wielding with the Staff of Spellpower using the Dual Wielder Feat.

Amulet of Greater Health

You might want to stack HP on your frontliners, but I highly recommend this item on Gale. The increase to Constitution and the Advantage on Constitution saving throws will massively boost Gale’s concentration on spells. You’ll never lose concentration again, and if you took War Caster, you can now respec it into Dual Wielder to wield both the Markoheshkir and the Staff of Spellpower. You can loot it from the House of Hope along with the Orphic Hammer.

That’s it for my guide on the best gear for Gale in Baldur’s Gate 3. For more Baldur’s Gate 3 guides, check out the best Wizard spells or more great magic items for Wizards.
