Can You Play Helldivers 2 on PS4?

Helldivers 2 has taken the internet by storm, and its PC and PlayStation 5 player base keeps growing each day. That said, fans are wondering whether the game is accessible on a PlayStation 4 console. So, can you play Helldivers 2 on PS4?

Is Helldivers 2 on PS4?

Helldivers 2 launched on February 8 on Steam and the PlayStation 5. These are the only two ways to play the game as of yet. This means that Helldivers 2 isn’t currently available on PlayStation 4. Furthermore, Arrowhead Game Studios hasn’t announced anything about PS4 backward compatibility.

This is probably because if they were going to make a PS4 version, they would be limited by aging hardware. Granted, Arrowhead might release a PS4 with tweaked settings but so far this seems highly unlikely. Unfortunately, this means that the player base with older consoles will be alienated.

The original Helldivers was available on the PS4, but we have to keep in mind that the change in gameplay perspective is huge. Switching from an isometric twin-stick shooter style to a third-person one goes a long way in requiring better performance. There are examples where the system requirements weren’t that steep like with Risk of Rain 2 but that game had simplistic graphics. Helldivers 2 graphics opted for a much more realistic style, thus requiring a more modern machine.

Will Helldivers 2 Ever Release on PS4?

So far, it seems unlikely. Arrowhead hasn’t announced any plans to go back, and this is probably because their game engine wouldn’t run on PS4. Just the particle and effects for Helldivers 2 are too much for outdated hardware.
