Can You Remove Multiplayer Characters in Baldur’s Gate 3? Answered

Can you remove multiplayer characters from singleplayer in Baldur's Gate 3? The answer may surprise you.

Multiplayer in Larian’s newest CRPG is more flexible and, dare I say, fun than that in Divinity: Original Sin 2. I’ve already got a couple of co-op-only campaigns running alongside my solo one. However, there’s a bit of a problem with bringing a friend or two into my sessions. If you’re here, you’ve discovered it, too. Here’s how to remove multiplayer characters in Baldur’s Gate 3 when your friends log off and leave their avatars behind.

Can You Remove Multiplayer Characters in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Multiplayer is almost always a good idea in Baldur’s Gate 3, but it can be tricky if you plan to primarily play your campaign solo — or if the people or person you want to play with won’t be joining you again.

As I and many other players have found out the hard way, there was no way to remove multiplayer characters from single-player in Baldur’s Gate 3 at launch. However, Patch 2 implemented an official fix for this issue in the form of Withers.

You can remove characters from your party camp by talking to them. When you speak with a multiplayer character as the game’s host, you’ll get an option to send the character to camp (even if they’re already at the campsite, but you still have to select the option). After you send the character to camp, they’ll be removed from your group and placed in Withers’ Wondrous Wardrobe of Wayward Friends, from which you can retrieve multiplayer characters when you want to play with friends again.

This has been a problem with Divinity: Original Sin 2‘s multiplayer all this time, but Larian listened to players and implemented an official solution, letting you enter multiplayer games in Baldur’s Gate 3 without worrying that you won’t be able to progress when your friends aren’t online. Now, you can not only remove multiplayer characters, you can bring them back into your game by interacting with the wardrobe.

The answer to whether you can remove multiplayer characters from singleplayer in Baldur’s Gate 3 is now a cheerful one, and it’s one you’re going to want to know before joining or hosting a multiplayer campaign. Check out our Origin character overview guide or our array of Baldur’s Gate 3 guides.
