Catch Shinies Easily in Pokemon X and Y

Fishing Chaining is a new way to easily catch shiny Pokemon.
This article is over 11 years old and may contain outdated information

For those of you that don’t know, a shiny Pokémon is a rare Pokémon with a different color than it normally has. For example, instead of the normal blue color for Clawitzer, it is red. The color doesn’t change anything else about the Pokémon–it still has the same stats and everything. Normally, you have a 1/4096 chance to encounter a shiny Pokémon. This new method severely ups down that chance.

That’s right, the new method of catching shinies is fishing chaining. There is a guy in a fishing shack on route 16 that tells you about fishing chaining. He tells you to try to chain as many fish as you can.

Once you have chained a certain number–I went to him at eight–he will tell you that fishing chaining is a way to catch rare Pokémon. He must be talking about shiny Pokémon, because they are very easy to get this way. You don’t have to go to him to be able to use this method, all you need is a rod. I would suggest at least a Good Rod though.

The method is simple; go to a spot and fish. Don’t move from that spot, and don’t fail to reel in a fish. It is a good idea to have a Pokémon leading your party that has the ability Suction Cups. This will make sure you always get a bite; all you have to do is reel it in time. The Pokémon can be fainted, so you don’t have to worry about leveling up your Suction Cups Pokémon.

Remember to bring plenty of Ultra, Nest, or Net balls and a Pokémon that won’t defeat the shinies. Running from a Pokémon will not break the chain, so just run away until you meet a shiny.

The results vary, but I’ve caught a shiny in as little as 10 casts, and my longest was about 30. People have reported to take up to 100 casts or more though. I’ve captured 5 shinies already using this method so I can assure you that it is legit.

You have no control over which Pokémon will be shiny though, so it is best to fish in a place that has a few different Pokémon you want. My favorite spot was Cyllage City with the Good Rod because I was sure to get either Horsea or Clauncher/Skrelp. Clauncher is only in Pokémon X and Skrelp is only in Pokémon Y.

What do you think of this new method to catch shinies? Is it better now that you can get them easier, or does it lessen the value because they are so easy now? Discuss this in the comments.
