The Diablo 4 crowd control (CC) mechanic is something that you’ll want to master as you continue to progress throughout the campaign. With countless hostiles to annihilate, your best bet is to have a means of causing debilitating effects and pushing back hordes as you meet them. Our Diablo 4 crowd control guide takes a look at effects, such as slow, chill, freeze, and more.
What is Crowd Control and How Does it Work in Diablo 4?
The Diablo 4 crowd control mechanic lets you pin down or decrease the mobility of your foes. Crowd control abilities and skills allow you to face more enemies at once with a better chance of survival.
Diablo 4 Crowd Control Effects
- Chill — Frost spells will slowly encase your foe in ice to slow them down.
- Frozen — If enemies keep getting hit by Frost spells after being chilled, they also have a chance of getting frozen.
- Slow — Reduces movement speed.
- Stun — Incapacitates targets and prevents them from acting.
- Immobilize — Prevents targets from moving to another location.
- Fear — Causes enemies to run away in terror.
- Knockback — Pushes hostiles away.
- Knockdown — Pushes enemies and makes them fall on the ground.
- Taunt — Forces opponents to target the caster.
- Pull — Pulls hostiles toward the center of a vortex/spell.
- Tether — Often created by shackle-type objects, these will prevent you from moving away unless you destroy the tether itself.
Make no mistake, certain enemies will punish you with their own crowd control abilities if you’re not careful. For instance, elites with the Terrifying affix will create symbols on the ground, which will explode and cause fear. Others, meanwhile, will stun or knock you down after charging toward you.
Crowd Control Aspects and Uniques
- Aspect of Retribution — Distant enemies have an 8% chance to be stunned by you; deal +20-40% damage to stunned enemies.
- Aspect of Shared Misery — Lucky Hit: When you hit a crowd-controlled enemy, there’s up to a +34-50% chance for that effect to spread to other unaffected enemies.
As a Necromancer main, I primarily rely on my minions and spells to cause the Diablo 4 crowd control effects. Moreover, there are certain aspects and items that greatly complement the extensive use of crowd control. Here are some examples of aspects that can be used by all classes:
Here are some examples of skills, aspects, and uniques that I’ve used as a Necromancer to give you an idea of what crowd control can do:
- Coldbringer’s Aspect — Every 10 seconds, your Cold Skeletal Mages cast a Blizzard that deals X damage, continuously chilling enemies by 8% for six seconds.
- Aspect of the Void — Blight’s defiled area, when spawned, pulls in enemies around the affected area.
- Bloodless Scream (unique) — Darkness Skills can chill enemies for up to 40%. Lucky Hit: Darkness Skills have a guaranteed chance to generate +2-5 essence against frozen targets.
- Enhanced Corpse Tendrils (skill) — Target a corpse to pull in enemies before stunning them; the Enhanced perk also causes enemies to be slowed before getting pulled.
