Doing research is the only way to unlock certain building types and laws in Frostpunk 2. And as with everything else in the game, even the research mechanic is a bit convoluted. High Priority Ideas
The first high-priority idea you’ll probably unlock is the Blasting Coal Mine, which is coincidentally a mission requirement. It’s not the only high-priority idea you’ll need though. Get the following ideas as soon as they become available.
- Blasting Coal Mine – Coal Mine upgrade. Boosts the amount of Coal you can extract from a given node.
- Asbestos Lining – Reduces the demand for heat in Housing Districts. Surprisingly, it doesn’t increase disease chance at all.
- Crop Selection – Greatly reduces the overall heat demand of Food Districts.
- Vanguard Logistics Bay – Increases your available pool of Exploration Teams by 20.
- Efficiency Bonuses – Unlocks the efficiency bonuses law which noticeably increases production efficiency across all of your settlements.
- Mechanised Sawmills – Sawmill upgrade. Greatly increases the amount of Materials a given wood node can produce.
Of these, Asbestos Lining and Crop Selection are the ones you should pick up immediately as they don’t require you to spend any extra resources on them. The others will either have to be debated in the council hall or are buildings that require further resources to build.
Average Priority Ideas
If you play your cards right, you won’t immediately need these ideas and their bonuses. Still, you should eventually unlock them after you’ve established yourself and unlocked everything from the previous category.
- Recovery Hospitals – Unlocks the Recovery Hospital building for your Housing Districts which reduces nearby disease chance and increases your overall population growth.
- Dutiful Youth – Increases your active workers count, decreases crime, and unlocks the Youth Volunteer Duty ability. Also unlocks a few story events that can give further bonuses later on.
- Hear Recycling – Reduces the heat demand of your Housing Districts, however, it also carries a negative event with it that may trigger later on.
- Unproductive Do Maintenance – Decreases your overall material demand while increasing overall productivity. Just be mindful that not every population group will like it and will likely try to revoke it.
Of these, Recovery Hospitals is the most crucial. Try to unlock them as soon as possible and spread them out through your Housing Districts. The early to mid-game tends to have a lot of diseases, and hospitals are the perfect solution to that problem.
Low Priority Ideas
By themselves, these ideas are great, as they unlock potent and essential buildings for the mid to late game. Therein lies the issue though. These ideas are meant to be unlocked once you’ve established yourself and have your economy going. Don’t bother unlocking them until you have the ideas from the previous categories.
- Survivalists’ Headquarters – Decreases the exploration time of your Exploration Teams while also lowering the danger level of unexplored territories.
- Remoulded Prefabs Factory – Unlocks the Remoulded Prefabs Factory building which converts 70 Materials into +20 Goods each week.
- Refurbished Goods Factory – An upgraded version of the Remoulded Prefabs Factory which outputs more Goods but costs more to build and maintain.
