If fishing is one of your favorite activities in Stardew Valley, then you’ll want to take the time to catch the new fish with update 1.6, the Goby. This rare fish is reclusive but more valuable, so here’s how to catch a Goby in Stardew Valley.
How to Get a Goby in Stardew Valley
Like all fish, the Goby stays in specific areas of the valley, and that’s where you’ll want to try fishing for it. However, this isn’t any usual spot like the river or the beach. You’ll need to head up to the waterfalls in Cindersap Forest. Thankfully, it’s there during every season, so you can try to catch it whenever. You don’t have to wait for a rainy day, either.
Where to Find a Goby Fish
To reach the double waterfall in the forest, you can head south from your farm toward the sewers. You’ll need to pass by the Wizard Tower and locate the abandoned house where you find the hat mouse. Then, veer off to the right. That’s where you’ll spot a large waterfall with a small waterfall right beside it.
You can fish in either of the waterfall basins, where you’ll find the Goby fish. To increase your chances of catching, though, you’ll want to have utilize the best bait and lure that you can.
How to Catch a Goby
Before heading to the waterfalls to try and catch the Goby, do a quick trick over to Willy’s fish shop. He sells different kinds of bait daily, and you might be able to pick up a Goby Bait that will make catching it much easier. You could also make your own bait using the Bait Maker and a Goby fish if you happen to have one already. If you can’t get any Goby Bait, you can just use regular bait.
You’ll also want to use a better tackle if you have one. The best one to use for a Goby would be Curiosity Lure. This helps increase your chances of catching a rare fish. However, it is one of the harder lures to get since you cannot buy it from Willy. The only way to get it is from the mines or Skull Cave.
To place your bait and lure on your fishing rod, open your inventory, where you can see all of them at once. Then, drag your lure over to your fishing rod and right-click or press Y to equip it. The same goes for the bait.
Now that you’re all set up, head back to the waterfalls to try to catch your Goby. You have a 15% chance of catching it without using the Curiosity Lure or Goby Bait. Using both will increase your chances to 50%. However, regular bait will increase your chances a bit as well, so use anything you can.
I got it on my second try with the Curiosity Lure and regular bait attached to my rod. Don’t feel discouraged if you don’t get it on your first try. Keep trying, and you’ll catch it eventually.
Once you catch it, I recommend placing it in a fish pond at your farm. This way, you can farm the roe, which can become a better long-term profit than attempting to catch more fish. However, you can also use your Bait Maker to make some Goby Bait, which will help you catch more.
The roe can sell for 105g to 294g each, depending on how aged it is. The fish can sell for 150g all the way up to 450g depending on its rarity and your fishing skill.
