How to Craft, Use, and Dye Wolf Armor in Minecraft

Here's how crafting and applying the wolf armor work in Minecraft.

Wolves are excellent assistants and defense pets in Minecraft. But once you equip them with wolf armor, they’ll be so much more effective. In my guide, I’ll explain how to craft, use, and dye wolf armor in Minecraft, including the exact crafting recipe.

Minecraft: How to Craft Wolf Armor

Wolf armor can be crafted only from 6 Armadillo Scutes. It’s an item dropped by the armadillo mobs when brushed. But I noticed that they drop the scutes naturally every 5-10 minutes. Of course, it’s better to craft a simple brush and get as many scutes as you need. Please see my screenshot below for an exact crafting formula for the scutes in the crafting table:

Minecraft: How to Use Wolf Armor

Wolf armor, also known as dog armor in the Minecraft community, is a powerfully protective armor that can be equipped only on a tamed adult wolf. I managed to spot wild wolves in the forests, taiga, and snowy woods. To tame the wolf, simply feed it a regular bone, which can be found in abundance inside dungeon and temple chests.

Once you’ve been able to tame the wolf, you can equip it with wolf armor by interacting with the tamed wolf and holding the armor in your hands. Note that the wolf armor grants a +11 Armor bonus to your tamed wolf, which basically protects it from almost all types of damage. However, I must warn you that it’s not universal, and some types of damage completely ignore the presence of the wolf armor, including:

  • Drowning
  • Freezing
  • Suffocating
  • Magic
  • Thorns
  • The Wither Effect
  • The Void
  • Entity Cramming
  • Warden’s Shriek

Note that wolf armor is also completely ignored when players use the “/kill” command in Creative Mode. Also, if you try to equip shears on your armored wolf, the wolf armor will automatically unequip itself. The same happens when your wolf dies, so I recommend just picking it up and equipping it on another tamed wolf of yours.

Lastly, wolf armor can be repaired by simply adding more armadillo scutes to the damaged armor on the crafting table. One such cute heals wolf armor by 8 points of armor, which is why you should be doing it after each combat.

Minecraft: How to Dye Wolf Armor

The default color of the wolf armor is brown with gray patches. Fortunately, I discovered that it’s possible to dye wolf armor either on the crafting table or inside a cauldron. The formula is very simple and includes 1 Color Dye + 1 Wolf Armor.

If you wish to remove an applied color from your wolf armor, then simply place it inside the cauldron with clear water, and the dye will get washed off. After that, you can apply any other color you wish in a similar fashion.
