Players are reporting crashing issues when selecting a planet or being unable to find a match at all. I experienced the issue, as well. I was able to buy and switch gear but not click on Quickplay. Here’s how to fix Helldivers 2 crashing when choosing a planet.
Why Does Helldivers 2 Crashing When Selecting a Planet?
Essentially, Helldivers 2 servers are overloaded. While the game’s launch has been a great success, that also means that the influx of players has caused crashes when someone selects a planet. I’ve experienced other related issues, as well, where I can’t see my username while I’m on the ship, and my friends aren’t showing up in the social menu. While we wait for Arrowhead to fix these issues (they’re currently working on increasing server capacity), let’s try some fixes of our own that worked for me.
Helldivers 2 Crashing When Selecting Planet Fix #1: Restart Your Device
Even though I was on my ship in Helldivers 2, I was appearing as offline on Steam and I couldn’t see any friends in my social menu in-game. The simplest solution here is to:
- Turn off the game.
- Sign out and turn off Steam.
- Restart Steam.
- Restart the game.
This fixed the issue for me, but I’ve heard from friends that crashing persisted when they tried Quickplay again. In this case, let’s dive a bit deeper into the issue and explore solutions. The same goes if you’re playing Helldivers 2 on PS5. SImply restart your console before trying anything else.
Helldivers 2 Crashing When Choosing Planet Fix #2: Disable Crossplay
Numerous users on Reddit reported that disabling crossplay in Helldivers 2 fixes the planet crashing issue for them. To do this:
- Pause the game.
- Go to Options at the top.
- Select the Gameplay tab on the left.
- Locate the Crossplay option at the top.
- Switch it to Off.
This automatically disables crossplay which might cause you to stop crashing when searching for a game as you’ll only be playing with users on your platform. I would also try switching Matchmaking Privacy and disabling Allow Data Collection to see if these also work.
Helldivers 2 Crashing When Selecting Planet Fix #3: Disable Steam Overlay
Players on Steam forums reported issues with Steam Overlay and how disabling it fixed their Quickplay issue. This is worth a try so let’s disable our Steam Overlay like this:
- Open your Steam client.
- Click on Steam in the top-left corner.
- Select Settings.
- Navigate to the In-Game section on the left.
- Uncheck the “Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game” option.
From here, relaunch Helldivers 2 and see if this fixed your planet crashing issue.
Helldivers 2 Crashing When Choosing Planet Fix #4: Update Your GPU Drivers
We should also update our graphics card drivers as this can sometimes fix crashing issues. I have an Nvidia GPU and to update it you need to:
- Launch the GeForce Experience app.
- Go to Drivers in the top-left.
- Click on Check for Updates.
- Download the latest one that pops up.
You’ll have to restart your game and your PC after this but numerous users reported that this fixed crashing issues for them.
Lastly, check out our guide on fixing miscellaneous Helldivers 2 crashes. You can find common solutions there like verifying game files or checking your Firewall settings. If nothing fixes your issue, then it might just be a matter of waiting before Arrowhead fixes its servers. Keep your Helldivers 2 game updated and check back often whether you can select a planet.
