How to Get a Fishing Rod in Fields of Mistria

The residents of Mistria are pretty generous with their tools, but getting a fishing rod requires a bit more work.

It took me an embarrassing amount of time to get my first fishing rod in Fields of Mistria, and I think it’s safe to say I’m not alone in this. Starting out, every tool at your disposal is given to you by a townie, either upfront or as a reward for completing requests, with the exception of the fishing rod. You can spot Terithia fishing on a daily basis, so it’s fairly intuitive that you’ll earn this tool from her, though you’re not given any hints on how to do it. Here’s how you can get your first fishing rod in Fields of Mistria.

Where to Get a Fishing Rod in Fields of Mistria

Starting out in Fields of Mistria, I chatted up Terithia anytime I saw her out and about, hoping I’d earn a fishing rod as part of a relationship milestone or story reward without any luck. To get your first fishing rod, you’ll need to make a trip to Terithia’s store and buy one yourself.

Her house and shop are located on the beach in the bottom-left corner of the map, right below Sweetwater Farm. If you head out west from your farm and go for the southernmost block, you can reach this area in no time at all. Whether Terithia’s part-timing at the counter or not, you can purchase a Worn Fishing Rod from the register here for 500 tesserae.

Rod Upgrades

From the start of your Fields of Mistria playthrough, you can view tool upgrades at the Blacksmith’s storefront. You’ll have copper upgrades to work with at first, which require copper ingots to strengthen your rod and other tools. With that being said, you can simply purchase a copper fishing rod from the shop upfront, provided you have enough copper ingots and cash on hand. You don’t even need to play through March’s tutorial to use his forge, so this is a feasible option early on.

Admittedly, I discovered this shortcut well before I ever made my way to Terithia’s beachfront store and figured I had to be missing something. From there, I finally headed down to the beach, purchased my Worn Fishing Rod, and mastered the basics before opting to buy a stronger tool.

How to Fish

Farming and life sim fans can be pretty opinionated when it comes to fishing mechanics, with aficionados divided between Animal Crossing-esque techniques and Stardew Valley-style minigames. Fishing falls under the former in Fields of Mistria, a major plus in my book. You can even dive in and grab a fish with your bare hands when the opportunity arises. However, while much of your success as a fisherman relies on timing here, there is a bit of a trick to getting your cast just right.

Lining up your swing is the key to reeling in any catch. This is simple enough, though you’ll need to bear in mind that casting at an angle in a no-go. For an easy cast, be sure to get as close as you can to the water’s edge and pay attention to where the fish’s shadow is headed. Cast your line within its sight, holding X to get the length of the cast right.

Once a fish spots the bobber, it’ll nibble a few times, then bite down. Press X again as soon as you see an exclamation point pop up over your head to reel it in. With some practice, you’ll go pro in no time. Head over to our Fields of Mistria guides hub for more tips on romance and mining for peat and sod.
