If you're looking to increase the means of production in Timberborn, you're going to need gear. Here's what you need to know.

How to Get Gears in Timberborn

If you're looking to increase the means of production in Timberborn, you're going to need gear. Here's what you need to know.

One of the most important factors in city growth, even with beaver colonies, is increasing the means of production. To ensure that your Timberborn colony stays fed and has the resources to expand and survive droughts, you’re going to need factories producing materials. Before you can build these factories, however, you’ll need a crucial resource: gears. Here’s everything you need to know about them.

Timberborn: How to Unlock Gears

We’re going to start from square one here, assuming you’ve just created your new world. The first step is generating power, which will be used to power the gear workshop where the gears are produced. To do this, you’re going to need to construct a water wheel in one of your rivers. The flowing water will spin the wheel and generate power for you.

If you want to increase the power, you can do so by increasing the flow rate of the river by creating a bottleneck with dams. The smaller the gap for water to flow, the faster it will spill out. Up next, you want to connect this water wheel to a lumber mill. The gear workshop will come a bit later.

The lumber mill is where planks will be mass-produced, which are a required resource to make gears. Depending on how many gears you plan on using, you can set up additional lumber mills and water wheel if you feel the need to. Continue to play until you’ve accrued 100 research points, after which you can unlock the gear workshop.

Construct and connect a gear workshop to a water wheel. At this point, gear production will begin, using planks generated from your lumber mill at a 1:1 input/output ratio. Now that you’ve got gears being made, build yourself a warehouse so you can store them.

Timberborn: What Are Gears Used For?

Similar to planks, gears are a building ingredient used to construct higher-tier buildings and factories that will require research points to unlock. These buildings include all of the following:

  • Bakery
  • Carousel
  • Explosives Factory
  • Gristmill
  • Large Water Tank
  • Large Windmill
  • Paper Mill
  • Shredder
  • Tribute to Ingenuity
  • Underground Warehouse

As you can see, gears are essential to your colony’s growth as they open up numerous doors for further storage and the production of anything you could need. If you intend on creating a fully sustainable, elaborate city in Timberborn for your beavers, you’re going to want some gears in your back pocket.
