How to Get Past the Furnace Golem in the Ruins of Unte in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree

Furnace Golems are awful, and I hate them, but if you want every item in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree, you’ll need to wake the dormant one sitting in front of the Ruins of Unte. Unfortunately, getting past the idiot requires rare crafting materials and an out-of-the-way recipe book. Here’s everything you need to know.

How to Wake the Ruins of Unte Furnace Golem in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree

The short version of how to get past the Ruins of Unte Furnace Golem is to throw a Hefty Furnace Pot into its head. Actually, doing that is a bit more complicated because you need at least one Hefty Cracked Pot, the crafting book that lets you craft Hefty Furnace Pots, and the crafting materials to make them. Oh, and only one of those things is easy to do.

The easiest Hefty Cracked Pot you can get in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree is at the Scorched Ruins in the Gravesite Plain.

On the southeast side of the ruins, near some shadow men, is a corpse with what is likely your first Hefty Pot. Alternatively, you can go to Bonny Village and get two Hefty Pots while you’re grabbing the O Mother gesture.

With Hefty Crack Pot in tow, you now need the Greater Potentates Cookbook [2] to unlock crafting Hefty Furnace Pots. Thankfully, it’s also easy to come by. You’ll find it in the Gravesite Plain on the western side of the bridge leading to Castle Ensis. From the Scorched Ruins, travel north toward the Ailing Village, and when you see the path go downward, follow it back east toward the base of the bridge. There’s a small shack there, the Run Down Traveler’s Rest, where you can find two Furnace Visages and the Cookbook you need.

You’ll also need two Embers of Messmer and two Redflesh Mushrooms to craft the Furnace Pot. You can find tons of Embers of Messmer in the camp just south of the Shadow Keep in the Scadu Altus. You’ll find Redflesh Mushrooms in any of the forested areas of the Gravesite Plain, Scadu Altus, and most other locations.

Now, head back to the Ruins of Unte and, from the Castle Watering Hole Site of Grace, keep toward the northern cliffs. You’re looking for the ruined building leading up to a landing overlooking the Furnace Golem, and you need to wake. It’s on the northwest side of the ruins. From there, you have a good vantage point on the Furnace Golem’s…head cage? Stand facing it and throw the pot at the Golem. You don’t need to land it perfectly in the cage. As long as some of the fire hits, you’re good.

Once the Golem gets up, you can “safely” go into the Ruins and grab the Stone-Sheathed Sword and the Giant Golden Arc Incantation.

And that, friends, is how you wake up the Furnace Golem sleeping in front of the Ruins of Unte. Remember how it’s done because there are some Golems with guards around their ankles, meaning you need to throw Hefty Pots into their head cages. In those cases, you can use simple, Hefty Fire Pots, but Furnace Pots do the most damage.
