Herbalists and miners are going to be the professions who can gather Writhing Samples. Just like in Dragonflight, ore nodes and herbs can have different properties. Those properties impact what additional items you have a chance to harvest from them. In The War Within, Altered Herbs and Weeping Ore have a chance to give you Writhing Samples.

Writhing Samples are blobs of biomass that are needed for recipes such as Tempered Potions, Writhing Hide, and Authority of the Depths. Although these are able to be gathered in the world if you have the right professions, you can also purchase them at the auction house if you don’t want to farm them yourself. Given how rare the nodes that drop them seem to be, buying the samples from the auction house might be the best option if the prices aren’t too high on your server.

Right now, it seems that these herb and ore types are rather rare. Drop and spawn rates might change in future patches to increase that. However, I don’t expect the spawn rate for these nodes to go up. Instead, it seems they’re meant to be on the rare side. I had the best luck finding them in Azj-Kahet. Even then, I found only a handful of these nodes in the time I spent farming them.
