A mount is an essential part of the MMORPG experience, no matter the MMORPG you’re playing. In Final Fantasy XIV, that means getting your own chocobo mount as any Final Fantasy protagonist needs. Of course, as with most things in the game, you have to progress the story to a certain point to get your first mount.
Your chocobo isn’t just a mount in FFXIV. We’ll go over how to get it, as well as how to make it your companion and what you can do with it.
FFXIV Chocobo Main Story Quest
As you push through the early levels of the game, be sure to keep up with your main story quests. These are referred to as MSQ by much of the community, and it will be called such through the rest of this guide.
You will want to keep up with MSQ perpetually throughout your time with Final Fantasy XIV as they unlock essentially the entire game. I can’t emphasize this enough.
The quest you are going to want to look out for is a Level 20 quest named My Little Chocobo.
This is a blue quest that unlocks after you have gone to each of the three major cities and chosen a Grand Company to align yourself with. The quest will can be picked up at the Grand Company you’ve chosen. Be sure to do every Grand Company quest as they come up as well.
Once completed, you’ll be able to name and ride your bird in zones outside of cities.
Note: Even if you buy a mount from the Mogstation, you will not be able to ride it until you complete the My Little Chocobo quest.
Chocobo Companion Quest
So, you’ve got your mount and you’ve heard they can fight with you. It’s true! They’re your trusty FATE farming companions later in the game in particular.
To take your ally from a useful mount to a trusted companion, you’ll need to do another quest. This one unlocks at Level 30, and it is called My Feisty Little Chocobo.
This quest can be picked up from an NPC named Luquelot in the South Shroud, in Bentbranch Meadows in particular. It’s hard to miss as it’s a blue quest. Get into the habit of always accepting quests with blue icons.
As your companion, your chocobo will join you on the field of combat for 30 minutes after you’ve fed it Gysahl Greens. Though not in any sort of instanced content, including independent duties or dungeons.
Where to buy Gysahl Greens in FFXIV
So you’ve got your buddy, you want to have it stick around. You’ve got to feed it Gysahl Greens for that. Gysahl greens are sold by just about any vendor that is labeled as a ‘Merchant & Mender’ for only 36 gil each.
In Bentbranch Meadows in the South Shroud, where you first unlock the ability to use your chocobo as a companion, the closest one is circled below.
Other sorts of vendors sell Gysahl Greens as well. Their names are varied, but they do tend to be a general merchant of some sort.
Chocobo Color, Skills, and More
Familiarize yourself with the Companion menu in the Character tab in the miscellaneous menu options at the bottom of the screen.
There are a few of things you can do with your chocobo once you’ve fully made it into your companion.
- Bring it into battle — Just feed it Gysahl Greens and it will join you on the field. You do not really need to do any directing for your chocobo.
- Dress it up — You have three slots on your mount for cosmetics. One for the head, one for the body, and one for the legs. These are called bardings and are obtained via content, or just buying them off the market board.
- Teach it skills — You can teach your new companion some combat abilities via the Skills tab in the Companion menu. Most of these are passive stat increases, but there are some actives. Choose what you like, there’s no meta for your bird.
- Dye it — This requires a stable, which you will either need an apartment or a Free Company with a house to do. If you do, use this chocobo color calculator to determine the order of fruits to give it to get the desired color.
Something to note, which many newer players get confused by, is that your mount is not related to your racing chocobo whatsoever. They are completely different systems, so don’t stress about whether you can stable your bird or not unless you’re trying to dye it or boost its rank via Thavnairian Onions.
This is about all you need to know about how to get a chocobo mount and what you can do with it in FFXIV, as the systems surrounding the series’ signature birds as companions are not particularly complex and should be easy enough to handle. For more, consider checking out our other FFXIV guides!
