How to Plant (& Water) Crops in SunnySide

RainyGames’ SunnySide entered its beta testing period on June 19, 2024, and has since received a largely mixed response from its Steam player base. Complicated mechanics can make gameplay rather tedious at times, especially when you’re just getting started at your farmstead. On the bright side, there are plenty of tutorials covering basic tools and their uses. However, some details are left to the imagination, like how to get your seeds in the ground and care for crops moving forward. To streamline the process, we’ve outlined how to plant and water seeds in SunnySide.

How to Plant Seeds in SunnySide

Before you can plant your seeds in SunnySide, you’ll need to pocket all three starter tools. You’ll find them inside a cardboard box in your shed. Assign each tool to a slot on your tool wheel, then get started on readying your field. You’ll likely need to clear the grass in the area with your nata first, as your crops won’t grow well if they’re neighbored by weeds. After that, till as many blocks as you need with your digging fork.

Once you’re set, open your inventory and find the seeds you want to plant. If you’re working with the loose potato or strawberry seeds given to you by Gabriel and Katherine, you should be good to go. However, you’ll need to manually open seed packs ordered through the Sunny Seed Company app. To do this, use the Options command in your inventory and hit Open Pack. Finally, make sure you move the seeds to your backpack if you haven’t already. Otherwise, you won’t be able to access them in the field. (Believe me, I tried.)

With your seeds available, navigate to the Backpack section of your inventory using Up and Down on your D-pad, and choose which seeds you’d like to plant using Left and Right. You’ll see the Plant directive pop up when you hover over the tilled areas of your field.

Watering Crops

Since there are several ways to access water on your farm in SunnySide, it took me a lot longer to figure out how to water my crops than I’d like to admit. After a bit of trial and error, I realized you can simply grab the hose off the side of the shed and get to work. Fortunately, there isn’t a trick to using it; simply aim and fire. Just make sure each crop has had its fill before moving on. The plants you’ve watered are highlighted in blue, while thirsty plants remain dark.

Ordering Seeds

Ordering seeds through the Sunny Seed Company app is simple enough. Once unlocked, you’ll find the app on your phone’s home screen. You can order a pretty extensive variety of plants from the get-go, so you’ll have plenty of options to get your farm going and make some money. I opted for bunching onions, chives, and cucumbers to start since each requires little maintenance. To make the best call, be sure to check seasonal requirements and fertilizing needs before you buy.

You’ll gain access to a grand total of 113 different crops to grow as you make progress in SunnySide.
