Spider-Man 2 combines the best of two worlds, letting you play as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales. Each hero has different skills and abilities suited for various situations and slightly different playstyles. But it’s not immediately clear how to switch characters in Spider-Man 2.
How to Change Characters in Spider-Man 2
In the early parts of Spider-Man 2, you’ll bounce between Peter Parker and Miles Morales as you go through the tutorial and fight Sandman. Eventually, you’ll stay in the role of Peter while Miles takes care of his college application. And after a nostalgic sequence as Peter, you’ll play as Miles again, setting up each character’s motivation for the story that follows.
Eventually, though, you can swap between both heroes (mostly) at will as you explore New York City, putting a stop to crime and taking part in side missions and challenges. There will be times you can’t (the game will let you know with a warning message), and there will be missions that require one character or the other.
But to even get the option, you’ll need to play through most of the Amends mission. This is the sixth quest in the story. After taking care of things on the Raft, you’ll finally have access to an option in the FNSM App.
Here are the steps for switching between the two heroes freely.
- Open the FNSM App by swiping left on the touchpad.
- Hold Square to swap characters.
- You’ll see “Switch to Miles” or “Switch to Peter” in the bottom right of the FNSM pop-up, along with their respective masks used as icons.
- You can also reach the change characters option by pausing the game. Then, scroll down to “Open FNSM App” near the bottom above settings.

How Changing Between Peter and Miles Works
Changing characters in Spider-Man 2 is seamless, and you can even do so while using Web Wings. There will be a brief loading screen. Then, you’ll be treated to what I believe are randomly generated, unique scenes of Peter or Miles doing something in the city. The first time I used this feature, Peter was taking a picture with a street vendor, and Miles was relaxing on a rooftop in Queens.
Unless you’re at an activity that requires a certain Spider-Man, such as Prowler Stashes, your position on the map will change slightly when you swap characters. You won’t be in the exact same place as you were previously, but instead somewhere nearby.
This is a nice little meta-narrative mechanic that increases the game’s immersion, in my opinion. Since Peter and Miles only come together in combat or scripted scenes, it makes sense either would be out in the city doing something else while you’re exploring.
However, keep this mechanic in mind if you’re near a Photo Op, one of Marko’s Memories, a Prowler Blind, or anything else you want to interact with. You’ll have to travel back to the location if you switch (but Web Wings makes traversal so much easier, it’s not a huge deal).
