Does Honkai Star Rail Have an Open World Design? 

No, Honkai Star Rail isn’t open world. However, its world is semi-open since you can select a variety of different places to visit. However, the amount of exploring you can do in those available areas is limited.

One of the main settings you’ll be seeing a lot of in Honkai Star Rail is the Astral Express, which is essentially a train built for traveling through space. The Astral Express will be your ride from location to location as the Trailblazer.

Given the importance of the Astral Express, it makes sense that HoYoverse has opted for a semi-open world in Honkai Star Rail instead of a fully open world. However, the game has plenty to explore, even with its limitations. Additionally, HoYoverse will likely continue adding new locations going forward, similar to Genshin Impact, where entire regions have been added since its release through updates and patches.

After you select your main character and complete the beginning portion of the game that teaches you how to fight and level your skills, you’ll be able to take to the stars on the Astral Express to explore a semi-open world.
