World of WarCraft is one of the most popular and important MMOs ever made. At nearly 20 years old, Blizzard’s genre-defining MMO has accumulated millions of players and nine expansions. With the recent release of Dragonflight, you might be looking to jump in and try the game out, or return after some time away. But you’ll probably want to try the game out before you commit to it, so you might be wondering: is World of WarCraft free?
Is World of WarCraft Free? Answered
The answer to whether World of Warcraft is free or not is… kind of.
You can download World of WarCraft, make an account, create a character, and play to Level 20 for the low, low price of $0. Playing through level 20 is completely free.
Once you reach Level 20, however, you’ll have to start paying for a subscription, which will run you about $15 a month. You can save some money by subscribing for longer periods of time, but you still have to pay to play WoW.
A subscription will get you access to everything up until Dragonflight, but if you want to play the latest expansion, you’ll have to buy it, as well. The base expansion costs about $50, but it regularly goes on sale for less than that, and there are more expensive editions if you’re feelin’ fancy.
So, long story short, yes: you can play World of WarCraft for free through Level 20. For anything beyond that, you’ll have to pay for a subscription, and if you want to play the latest expansion, you’ll have to pay for that, too. For more on World of WarCraft, check out our guides hub.
