Lords of the Fallen takes place in the dark lands of Mournstead, which is divided into the Axiom realm, the world of the living, and the Umbral realm, the land of the dead. How to Survive in the Umbral Realm in Lords of the Fallen

To survive in the Umbral realm in Lords of the Fallen, make sure you look at the counter at the upper-right corner of your screen. You need to watch out once it hits the 3.00x multiplier.

How to Enter the Umbral Realm

You’ll visit the Lords of the Fallen Umbral realm in a near-constant basis throughout the campaign. This is primarily due to puzzle sections, where you can only proceed past obstacles via the Umbral realm. Alternatively, there are also Umbral Stigmas (i.e. echoes of spirits), which are used to purchase boss items, as well as various loot that can only be found by traversing through this shadowy world.

Here’s how you can enter the Umbral realm in the game:

  • Bring out your Umbral Lamp and hold X on an Xbox gamepad or Square on a PlayStation gamepad to shift realms.
  • Bring out your Umbral Lamp to see a glimpse of the Umbral realm within the Axiom realm. If an enemy grabs you, you’ll get instantly transported.
  • Dying in the Axiom world automatically takes you to the Umbral. In a way, this is like an extra life. However, if you die in the Umbral, you’ll drop all your Vigor/XP/souls and respawn at your last tagged waypoint/bonfire.
  • Moth Mimics, which look like loot orbs, can eat and kill your character and cause an instant switch to the Umbral.

To return to the Axiom realm, you’ll have to tag a totem-like object or rest at a vestige/seedling waypoint. The latter, however, will cause enemies to respawn.

How Does the Umbral Realm Multiplier Work

To survive in the Umbral Realm, you must carefully look at the multiplier or counter in the upper-right corner of your screen. The higher it is, the more XP you’ll earn. However, staying for prolonged periods also causes more enemies to spawn.

I feel that this is a great way to farm XP since there’s an unlimited number of enemy mobs that appear. I would usually kill weaker foes like Husks, up until the 2.00x multiplier just to be safe. Also, keep in mind that the gaps between multiplier values are somewhat misleading. It goes from 1.1x to 1.2x, followed by 2.00x and 3.00x, with shorter gaps between intervals.

What Happens Upon Reaching the Highest Multiplier Threshold

Upon reaching the highest threshold with a 3x multiplier, a Revenant with a red glow will appear. This specter has extremely high health and devastating attacks. Moreover, this state prevents you from using your Sanguinarix healing flask, so you really need to be careful.

In my case, I opted to stay closer to waypoints while farming since they would let me switch back to the Axiom world swiftly. But if enemies are too close to it, you could get attacked while clicking on the panel. Moreover, you won’t be able to activate totems to swap worlds if there are enemies nearby.

Long story short: you can only survive in the Umbral Realm for a short while, roughly around the 2x multiplier mark. Once you reach the 3x multiplier mark, it’s going to be very tough and hectic due to the Revenant elite and locked healing.
