Why Isn’t Private Match Working in MK1
If you’re having trouble with Private Matches, then the problem is likely due to the server or your internet connection. In the case of the former, there’s not much you can do but wait until they’re sorted out. It’s worth mentioning that for most players with these issues during the first week, it’s been the private match not working error has been server-side. In the case that it’s an issue with your connection, we suggest trying out the following troubleshooting methods.
Check Your Internet Connection
One of the first steps in diagnosing the cause of the issue is to check your internet connection. An unstable internet connection can easily be the reason for your problem. Use a browser speed test or an app from your internet provider to ensure everything is running fine.
Those playing on a console can also check their connection straight from their platform of choice. Here’s how:
PlayStation 5
- Home Screen > Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection
Xbox Series X|S
- Home Screen > Settings > General > Network Settings > Test Network Speed & Statistics
Nintendo Switch
- Home Menu > System Settings > Internet > Test Connection
Use an Ethernet Cable
A Wi-Fi connection can sometimes be unreliable, which is why we recommend using an ethernet cable if you can. The high precision required during fighting games already benefits immensely from a solid connection, and you’ll need that to pull off fatalities. That being said, Mortal Kombat 1 seems to suffer a bit more when someone is using Wi-Fi, from our experience. Consider switching to an ethernet cable to have the best possible environment to play in.

Reset your Router
Resetting your router can be just the fix you need if everything else is working as it should. As easy as it is to lampoon the advice of “turning it off and on again,” sometimes that’s exactly what’s needed with a router. Turn it off for about a minute, and then turn it back on. It will take a while for everything to connect and run again, but you might just find your problem solved.
That’s how to fix private match not working in Mortal Kombat 1. Hopefully, one of these methods worked for you!
