This week’s Super Effective Files focuses on Water-type Pokemon. The spotlight will be on Clawitzer, but first I would like to go over some general info on Water Pokemon.
Water is another common type and is always one of the starter choices. Water is good in both offense and defense and has a varied move list. Like Grass, Water can have some strong offensive moves, as well as great support/healing moves.
Water Type Info
Offensively, Water can deal double damage to Fire, Rock, and Ground. It only deals half damage to Grass, Dragon, and Water. That’s a pretty good mix, but most Water Pokemon can also learn Ice moves, which deal double damage to Grass and Dragon, so they can cover most weaknesses.
Defensively, Water Pokemon take double damage from only Grass and Electric. They take half the damage from Fire, Water, Ice, and Steel.
The majority of Water moves are Special Attacks, but there are some Physical ones as well. There are support moves like Aqua Ring, which restores HP to the user each turn, and Withdraw, which raises the Defense stat.
Surf is the most popular Water Special Attack for a few reasons. It is a strong Water move and most people can learn it — it can attack multiple people in multi-battles, and it lets you travel across water when traveling in the world.
Waterfall is a great alternative to Surf if you want Physical Attack. There are also a couple of Physical priority moves, which are moves that go first. Aqua Jet is like a Water-type Quick Attack, and Water Shuriken is similar and hits 2-5 times in a turn.
Today’s spotlight will be on Clawitzer, which is a Special Sweeper. Clawitzer focuses on strictly attacking and its ability gives it a unique moveset.
The Power of Water
Overall, Clawitzer has average stats except for Special Attack and Speed. Its Special attack is great, while its Speed is very low.
- HP: 71
- Attack: 73
- Defense: 88
- Special Attack: 120
- Special Defense: 89
- Speed: 59
Clauncher evolves into Clawitzer at level 37. Clawitzer only has 1 ability, Mega Launcher. This is fine since it is a great ability to have and it affects the moveset selection.
- Mega Launcher – Powers up aura and pulse moves by 50%.
Blasting with Clawitzer
Clawitzer’s ability means that any move it uses that has “Sphere” or “Aura” at the end of the name will deal 50% more damage. Luckily, Clawitzer can fill all 4 move slots with these types of moves.
For nature, Modest is the best choice since it raises Special Attack and lowers Attack. Mine is Docile, which does not raise or lower any stats, because I chain fished it until I got a shiny and had no control over the nature.
I EV/Super Trained Special Attack and HP to the max. Since the speed is so low, raising it would not make a big difference.
The moveset I use is Aura Sphere, Dark Pulse, Water Pulse, and Dragon Pulse.
- Aura Sphere is a strong Fighting Special Attack and it never misses.
- It gets the 50% boost and it is strong against a lot of types.
- Dark Pulse is a strong Dark Special Attack that also has a chance to make the target flinch.
- The extra 50% damage helps out as well.
- Water Pulse is a strong Water Special attack that also has a chance to confuse the target.
- It is the weakest of the 4 moves, but Clawitzer also gets STAB on top of the 50% boost from the Mega Launcher ability.
- Dragon Pulse is a Strong Dragon Special Attack that benefits from the 50% boost and provides good coverage.
I usually use Mystic Water as my held item to make Water Pulse even stronger. Any item that increases the damage of any of these moves is a good idea.
A Quick Claw is also useful since Clawitzer is so slow and that gives you a chance to go first.
That wraps up this week’s Pokemon Super Effective Files! I’ll be here next week!
