Remnant 2: How to Beat Mother Mind Boss

Here's how to beat Mother Mind in Remnant 2, a tricky boss found in Yaesha.

In Yaesha, you’ll come across a terrible boss that, if you’re unlucky enough to meet early in your playthrough, can be incredibly tough to kill. Figuring out how to beat Mother Mind in Remnant 2 is more than half the battle since the boss can melt your Archetype faster than butter in an oven. Here are some tips for felling the foul beast.

How to Beat Mother Mind in Remnant 2

Here’s how to beat Mother Mind in Remnant 2:

  • Avoid her arm rakes by rolling away from the attacking arm.
  • Focus-fire on the orange center of the boss to deal crit damage.
  • Stay along the cliffs to your back during the whirl attack.
  • Avoid the pink corrosive sludge she puts on the ground at all costs.
  • Run to an entirely new platform when she rises up and pounds the platform you’re on.
  • Mostly ignore the minions unless they teleport close or are in your line of fire already.

If your playthrough is generated like mine, you’ll enter the boss area, and a cutscene will play, showing Mother Mind descend from the rocks above you. She’ll hover over the hole in the middle of the arena (where she’ll stay for the entirety of the fight).

You’ll also notice that you’re standing on a flat stone platform and that a stone pathway extends all the way around the arena. There are three other stone platforms: one straight across from you, one on the left, and one on the right. The entire pathway is connected by ramps.

The goal of this boss fight is to do enough damage to Mother Mind that she rears back, stares at the sky, then pounds the platform you’re standing on, destroying it and forcing you to another one. That happens three times until you reach the fourth platform, where you’ll have done enough damage at the point to defeat her.

Mother Mind Boss Fight Strategy

There’s isn’t all that much strategy to this fight. It’s more about survival than anything. But if you don’t know what to look out for or what to do, it can be incredibly frustrating. Here’s what I learned about Mother Mind’s attacks after fighting the boss several times and finally winning.

Arm Rake

Mother Mind often starts the battle with this move, which can come in one or two strikes. She’ll reach out an arm with a claw on it, stake in the ground behind you, and rake forward. Avoid this by waiting until the arm is behind, then quickly rolling the opposite way of the arm. If she attacks with the left arm, roll right. If you roll too early, you’ll likely get hit. I found waiting for about half a second after I felt like I should roll helped me avoid damage.

Whirling Dervish Spin Attack

Every once in a while, Mother Mind will “squish” down and flatten out, signaling a spin attack is coming. Run backward, away from the boss, and push along the cliffs to stay away from the spinning claws. This one is pretty easy to avoid once you’ve seen it once.

Corrosive Volley

If you don’t deal enough damage fast enough, Mother Mind will shoot mortars from orange circles on its back that land all around you. They leave pink corrosive sludge behind that deals massive damage and slows you. I died to this attack every time I lost to Mother Mind. The volley will almost always land around you, even if you change platforms. If you’re lucky, there will be a small path to navigate between the pink pools. The best strategy is to deal tons of damage quickly, keeping Mother Mind from using this attack at all (that’s how I beat the boss).

Ground Pound

Ground Pound is the most innocuous Mother Mind attack on the surface, but one that will kill you faster than Corrosive Volley. As mentioned before, Mother Mind will pull back and stare up at the sky once you’ve dealt enough damage on a single platform (which is usually around ¼ of the boss’ health bar). Run to another platform immediately and stop. Mother Mind will destroy the platform you were on, then turn to face you again. You can’t do very much damage by shooting Mother Mind from the side, so don’t waste your bullets. Do this three times, and you’ll beat the boss on the fourth platform.

Minion Spawn

Mother Mind will spawn flying tentacle minions, both the normal and iridescent teleporting variety, off and on through the entire boss fight. I suggest mostly ignoring these to deal damage to Mother Mind directly. I got distracted by the minions in two attempts and ended up dying to either the Corrosinve Volley or the Ground Pound because it gives the boss time to cycle through its attacks. Only attack minions when absolutely necessary. They despawn when the boss is defeated.

Ultimately, your strategy will differ from mine depending on your Archetype, build, weapons, Traits, and Perks. I ran Medic during this boss fight, wielding a +5 XMG57 “Bonesaw” with the Hotshot Mod. I’m not sure what other elements may work best on Mother Mind, but Fire did a decent job, and I was able to get multiple quick crits of 45 damage each hitting the boss in the orange center (my weapon has a 100% weak spot damage bonus). Not a lot in the scheme of things, but enough to get the job done.

I was also able to use Well Spring, which allows the Medic to drop a healing spring AoE to restore 12HP per second, something that was incredibly useful for this fight, since using a Dragonheart while maintaining constant damage is basically impossible. That’s how to beat Mother Mind in Remnant 2. Check here for how to beat Kaeula’s Shadow.
