Resident Evil 4 Remake: How to Solve the Cave Shrine Dial Puzzles

Solving the two cave shrine dial puzzles in chapter 4 of the Resident Evil 4 remake will get you one step closer to finding Ashley.

The Resident Evil 4 remake has two dial puzzles to solve in Chapter 4 before you’re able to get the Insignia needed to enter the church and rescue Ashley. You can solve the small cave and large cave shrine dial puzzles in whichever order you choose, but they must be completed before moving forward.

This entire section of Chapter 4 is brand new to the Resident Evil 4 remake, but these dial puzzles are callbacks to the original RE4. You’ll need to solve each of these to access the stone heads they’re hiding. Once you get each of the heads, you can return to the Mural Cave to put them in their place to receive the Insignia. Here’s how to solve the cave shrine puzzles.

Small Cave Shrine Dial Puzzle Solution

The Small Cave Shrine is located in the upper northeast corner of the lake. There, you’ll find a small cave with a shack containing a dial puzzle (and thankfully, no enemies). The puzzle has eight dials, three of which you’ll need to interact with for the solution.

Look for several yellow markings on the shack walls and the cave walls. These markings will tell you which of the three dials to press to open the door.

The screenshot above provides the solution to the puzzle, but if you’re going clockwise and starting with the switch in the top middle (12 o’clock) press:

  • The fourth, sixth, and seventh dials.
    • The fourth dial has three symbols on it and is in the bottom right corner.
    • The sixth dial has a series of three squiggly lines and is in the bottom left corner.
    • The seventh dial is above the sixth and has one curved line on it, which looks a bit like a bird.

Pressing these switches in the right order will solve the puzzle and open the door to the cage, where you can now pick up the first of two stone heads.

To get to the Large Cave Shrine dial puzzle in the Large Cave Shrine, you’ll have to fight through a horde of Ganados.

Make your way through this section (and don’t forget to unlock the shortcut back to your boat), and fight through the enemies until you reach the ladder that leads up to the area containing the puzzle. Even if you haven’t dispatched all the Ganados in the area, going into the puzzle screen will pause the action.

Again this cave puzzle solution involves pressing circular switches. Here’s the combination (shown in the image above, as well):

  • Start from the top middle dial located at 12 o’clock.
  • Press the dials located on both sides of it.
  • Press the dial directly below it at the bottom (6 o’clock).

Once you hit each of these buttons, the door will open, and you’ll be able to grab the second stone head.

That’s how to solve the cave shrine dial puzzles in chapter 4 of the RE4 remake. Now you can return to the mural cave and get the Insignia, which will let you into the church.
