Two of the first upgrade trees you’ll unlock in Black Myth: Wukong are the Foundation and the Staff Stance abilities. Other upgrade trees, like those related to spells, are unlocked slowly through the game, and are unlikely to be where you’ll put your first points. Let’s take a look instead at some of the Staff Stance abilities to unlock first in Black Myth: Wukong.
Staff Stance Abilities to Unlock First
Versatility
Versatility is one of the most universally useful skills in Black Myth: Wukong. In short, it increases the damage dealt by all varied combos, meaning those that include both light and heavy attacks. In practice, this means that the heavy attacks initiated during a light attack combo get a damage bonus. The reason this is so useful is because it applies to every stance in the game and only costs a handful of points to max out, making it a great early-game investment.
Force Unbound
This ability marks the start of the Smash Stance, the only stance available at the start of the game. Smash is also likely to be the main stance you’ll use throughout the game, so specializing in it early on is a good idea. Force Unbound allows you to sprint while charging a heavy attack. Dodging or getting hit interrupts a charging attack, making it essential to hit first, which is why you want to sprint.
Resolute Counterflow
Another Smash Stance skill, the Resolute Counterflow allows you to mix heavy attacks in a light attack combo. This heavy attack consumes a Flow point, just like a charge attack, but deals a little less damage than a regular heavy attack. There are two reasons to still use Resolute Counterflow: it’s faster than a charged heavy attack, and it can lead to See Through. If you trigger Resolute Counterflow right as an enemy hits you with an attack, you will ignore the damage and be more likely to stagger them.
Skyfall Strike
Skyfall Strike comes after Resolute Counterflow in the Smash Stance skill tree and can be thought of as an extension of that skill. It allows you to follow up on the Resolute Counterflow heavy attack with an additional attack, one that deals just as much damage but hits in a much wider area. While this ability is useful to increase damage, it does not carry on Resolute Counterflow’s See Through effect, meaning it does not make you invulnerable to damage if you time the attack well.
Offense in Defense
Offense in Defense is one of the first abilities you’ll unlock in the Thrust Stance, and it’s one of the most useful. This ability enables combined combos of light and heavy attacks in the Thrust Stance. Unlike the aggressive Smash Stance, mixing a heavy attack with a light combo results in a Tactical Retreat, which avoids damage and can be followed by a Forceful Thrust.
Those were all of our Staff Stance Abilities to unlock first in Black Myth: Wukong. Once you have enough hours into the game, you’ll be able to choose which skills are most useful for you. For more content about the game, visit our BMW guides hub.
