Farming is a core part of Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life, so this guide will run you through all the basics you need to know to get started in growing quality crops. Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life is a remake of the 2004 game Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life. While the farming mechanic hasn’t changed aside from the addition of hybrid crops, it’s unique compared to many other farming simulators.
How to Farm It Up in SoS: AWL
- Basic seeds can be purchased on Vesta’s farm.
- Takakura’s Notes can be accessed anytime for reminders.
- Soil color tells you when to water.
- Soil and seeds can be examined for information.
Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life will start you off with the tools you need to farm, and you’ll get a few seeds for free to begin with. You’ll also receive notes from Takakura that cover the basics of running your farm, and these can be accessed through the game menu or on the table next to your bed.
Seasons
Before you plant, you want to check that you’re planting in the right season for the seeds you have. I didn’t read the season when I got my first seeds from Vesta’s farm, so I had to wait another season to plant. When you examine the seeds, it’ll tell you which season or seasons to plant them in.
Some seeds can grow through a range of seasons, so these ones you can plant at the end of one season without having to worry about them withering when the next season begins.
The seasons for AWL’s normal crops are as follows:
- Tomato – Spring to Fall
- Watermelon – Spring to Summer
- Strawberry – Fall to Spring
- Melon – Summer to Fall
- Turnip – Summer to Winter
- Potato – Winter to Spring
- Carrot – Fall to Winter
- Sweet Potato – Fall
Soil Quality in Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life
You have two fields to begin with. One has poor soil quality, and the other has average soil quality. Since soil quality can affect crop quality, you’ll want to use fertilizer for the poor quality field. Fertilizer can be used twice a day and purchased from Vesta’s farm.
Because there are crops that can’t grow in poor quality soil, make sure you examine seeds before planting them. However, you don’t need to worry about soil quality with basic seeds, it’s only an issue with hybrid seeds that you can unlock after befriending Takakura.
Once you’re ready to plant, use the hoe to till the soil, then select the seeds and plant them. Afterwards, you’ll use the watering can to, as Takakura says, give them a drink.
Watering Crops
Story of Seasons has a more unique water system because you can water your plants more than once per day. It depends on the color of the soil, and the image below shows the difference between dry soil, wet soil, and soil that is wet but able to be watered again.
You can refill your watering can at the little water feature between fields.
As your crops grow, you can use Examine on them to find which stage they’re in and if they’ll be ready to harvest soon. From here, you’ll be able to start earning money on your farm to expand it and move onto growing hybrid crops and using the Seed Maker to avoid purchasing seeds each season.
