With almost all of your foes vanquished, only one challenge remains before you can finish the story. This fight is one of the hardest in the game, and you’ll want to know how to handle this big bad. Here, I’ll discuss how to beat Smithy in Super Mario RPG.
Super Mario RPG Smithy Tips and Tricks: How to Beat the Final Boss
To beat Smithy in Super Mario RPG, you must be mindful of his area-of-effect (AoE) abilities during both phases of the encounter. You must also be mindful of various devices the boss uses, spawned enemy mobs, and how he alternates between two kinds of heads.
Best Party Composition for the Smithy Boss Fight
I personally used Mario, Geno, and Peach for most of the Smithy encounter. I often cast Geno Blast or Geno Flash when I had flower points (FP) available. If any party members take a lot of damage, I suggest having Peach cast Group Hug to heal the entire team.
As for Mario, I mostly had him do normal attacks (with a bit of splash damage when I landed critical hits). Mario was also the one I used to replenish FP with Maple Syrup items.
Smithy Phase 1 Tips: Abilities and Attacks
During the first phase of the Super Mario RPG Smithy boss fight, you’ll also have to contend with the additional enemy mobs spawned by the Smelter. These enemies will automatically use a particular ability, such as Sword Rain, once they appear. You don’t really need to deal single-target damage to the mob or the Smelter, as it’s better to hit everyone with AoE skills. If you have to do a normal attack, just focus on Smithy.
Likewise, watch out for the boss’ abilities like Meteor Swarm and Sledge, as both of these hit the entire party and cannot be blocked. The former deals magical damage, and the latter deals physical damage.
Smithy Phase 2 Tips: Abilities and Attacks
Once you’ve depleted Smithy’s HP during Phase 1, your heroes and the boss will fall down a chasm, beginning phase two of the encounter. Smithy still retains his regular attacks and spells, though he loses access to the Smelter and spawned adds.
Instead, he’ll alternate between two modes (denoted by the shape of his head):
- Tank Head: Smithy is more susceptible to magical damage, especially electricity.
- Clown Head: Smithy is weaker against physical damage, which means you should just do normal attacks.
Eventually, you should be able to finish off Smithy, which leads to a cutscene and the end credits. Moreover, you’ll unlock various post-game content.
