Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom — How to Beat the Stone Talus Boss in TotK

The Stone Talus is one of many world bosses in Tears of the Kingdom. Here's how to beat it.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Stone Talus boss can be found all across Hyrule. While they’re all the same shape and use the same basic attacks, I’ve found how you beat them changes depending on which one you’re fighting and the location. This difference isn’t because of new attacks. Instead, all it’s just a slight design change. Here’s our guide to help you beat a Stone Talus Boss in Tears of the Kingdom.

How to Defeat the Stone Talus Boss in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

The best way to beat the TotK Stone Talus boss is to deal as much blunt or explosive damage to the crystal on its back. You can also deal explosive damage to its body for a significantly reduced amount, but trying to use a standard weapon on its limbs or main body will do nothing.

The crystal you need to hit on a Stone Talus boss isn’t in the same spot every time. For example, two of the several I’ve fought proved challenging for different reasons.

  • The Stone Talus in the Deya Well’s crystal is on its back.
  • The one in Crenel Hills Cave is on top of the boss.

In the former case, I needed to use jump and arrow attacks to deal consistent damage or wait for the boss to bury one of its arms or head in the sand for good damage. For easier access to crystals, simply climb the Talus’ body, stand on top of it, and wail away.

From my experience, you also need either a heavy, two-handed weapon — preferably one that deals blunt damage — to affect the Stone Talus’s crystal. Small-bladed weapons, spears, and other such gear won’t do much at all. You’ll also need to be mindful of its few but powerful attacks, each dealing at least six hearts worth of damage.

Here are all the attacks a Tears of the Kingdom Stone Talus can do.

  • Arm throw. The Stone Talus throws one of its arms at you. The boulder travels quickly and has a large hitbox, so run to either side to avoid it.
  • Arm slam. Provided it has an arm, the Talus slowly slams its arm into the ground. The shockwave extends this attack’s hitbox a little bit, so either be far enough away or behind the boss to avoid it.
  • Head slam. If you’re directly in front of the Stone Talus, it will rear back, then slam its whole body into the ground. This attack staggers the Talus for a few moments, giving you a chance to do damage.
  • Half Spin. The Talus winds up and spins 180 degrees in front of it. Run around its legs to avoid this attack.

Once you’ve beaten a Stone Talus boss, you’ll be able to use its Stone Talus Heart. While you may not know how to use it at first, it’s a fantastic item that can make your weapon much more powerful.

With all that in mind, you should have less trouble dealing with Stone Talus bosses in Tears of the Kingdom. If you’re looking for more help, strategies, and walkthroughs, check out our guides on how to ride dragons, how to beat Lynels, and more in our TotK guides hub.
