Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom — How to Use the Wing Device to Fly in TotK

Get the most out of the Wing Device with this guide to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Wing Device is one of many Zonai devices available in the game. You’ll find your first one during your journey through the Great Sky Island. There are more of them on Sky Islands scattered in the upper reaches of Hyrule. You can even get single-use versions of them from Device Dispenser. Here’s how to use these Wing Devices to fly the friendly skies in style.

How to Use Wing Devices in Tears of the Kingdom

The only requirement to use a Wing Device in Tears of the Kingdom is to get it airborne. You can do so by either positioning it near a ledge or using other Zonai tech to get it off the ground. Once the Wing Device is in the air, where you stand determines how it acts.

If everything is relatively balanced — if the device has nothing else on it or you positioned additional parts equally — you can stand on the foot symbol in the middle to fly relatively straight.

Turning, Accelerating, and Slowing Down the Wing Device

If you want to turn, speed up, or slow down your Wing Device, stand on either side, the front, or the back, respectively. The closer you are to the edge of the device, the more severe the turn or acceleration will be.

Be careful not to stand near the edge for too long, as you might send the device into a nosedive or otherwise destabilize its flight.

Getting the most out of your Wing Device depends on how you want to deploy it. The first ones you find will be on or near a launching pad, giving them the momentum to take off. Later ones will have additional complications, especially if you’re using them on the ground or you use a Device Dispenser orb to spawn one wherever you are.

Your Wing Device and Zonai Items

Attaching fans, rockets, and other Zonai tech will also augment how the Wing Device functions.

  • Fans and rockets will give it additional speed but require you to expend energy from your Energy Cells to keep them running.
  • Putting a control rod will let you steer it better, and you can even attach balloons to it for more passive lift.

How you use your Wing Device, like anything else in Tears of the Kingdom, is ultimately up to your imagination. You can even attach one to your shield or weapon if you’re inclined. I recommend the former if you’re rocking early-game gear.

Those are the basics of using the Wing Device in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The more you experiment with them and the rest of the game’s countless mechanics, the more ways you’ll find to explore Hyrule.
