Guide to Pokémon GO Spawn Point Locations

Unsure of where you can catch your favorite Pokémon in Pokémon GO? Well, look no further than GameSkinny's comprehensive spawn point location guide.
This article is over 8 years old and may contain outdated information

Fed up with constantly catching the same old Rattata or Pidgey? Want to know where all the good ones might be? Well maybe we can help! Given that Pokémon come in all shapes, sizes, and types, it is a good idea to know roughly where they can be found so you can base your Pokémon GO hunts in specific areas.

There are 14 different types of Pokémon, and each type shares certain characteristics. This means that in the real world of Pokémon GO they tend to spawn in the places you’d expect them to — i.e. plant-type Pokémon spawn in grassy areas and Water-type Pokémon spawn near water.

But some aren’t as simple as that, so I’m going to give you a rundown of the best places to find them. Some Pokémon fall into two different types, but for this guide, I will only be using one of the types.

(Remember, all types of Pokémon can be found by hatching eggs, so if you aren’t near any ideal spawn point locations you still have a chance of finding specific Pokémon.)

Bug

Wherever you find plants and grass, you will also find a lot of bugs. The same goes for the Pokémon GO world. You will often find these Bug-type Pokémon in proximity to Grass-types.

Bug Pokémon can be found in places such as parks, farmland, nature reserves and open grassy areas.

There are 12 bug Pokémon for you to catch in the wild: Caterpie, Metapod, Butterfree, Weedle, Kakuna, Beedrill, Paras, Parasect, Venonat, Venomoth, Scyther, and Pinsir.

Dragon

In first-generation there are only three Dragon Pokémon so, they are quite a special catch. They are commonly found around points of interest and, oddly, golf courses.

There are 3 Dragon Pokémon: Dratini, Dragonair, and Dragonite.

Electric

If you didn’t manage to get him as a starter Pokémon, I’m pretty sure you that you’ve been searching for Pikachu. But, along with his fellow Electric-types, these guys are pretty elusive.

Confirmed spawn point locations include near colleges, universities, and industrial parks.

There are 8 electric Pokémon: Pikachu, Raichu, Magnemite, Magneton, Voltorb, Electrode, Electabuzz, Jolteon, and legendary bird Zapdos (symbol for Team Instinct), which is not yet available in the game.

Fairy

Like their Dragon friends, Fairy-type Pokémon spawn points are close to landmarks and places of interest — especially churches and cemeteries. There are only 2 Fairy Pokémon in the first-generation: Clefairy and Clefable.

Fighting

The Fighting Pokémon have no need of spells and magic and prefer to use their brute strength. Naturally, these guys like to keep in shape and their spawn point locations reflect this.

Their common spawn points are located near stadiums, real-life gyms, and recreational areas.

There are 7 types of fighting Pokémon: Mankey, Primeape, Machop, Machoke, Machamp, Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan.

Fire

Yeah, these are the ones we like! Many of the Fire-type Pokémon are fan favorites (I’m talking about your Charizard!) so naturally many people want to find them. But where do you start looking for Fire-type Pokémon? It’s not like there are a lot of volcanos around. You will have a higher chance of catching them in drier climates, but they are found in any climate.

Common spawn point locations for Fire-type Pokémon include residential areas, beaches, and parks.

There 11 wild Fire-type Pokémon out there: Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard, Vulpix, Ninetales, Growlithe, Arcanine, Ponyta, Rapidash, Magmar, and Flareon.

I should mention that Moltres, the symbol for Team Valor, is a fire Pokémon, but as it is legendary, it cannot be found in the wild.

Ghost

These spooky guys like to hang out in the spooky places. Unsurprisingly Gastly, Haunter, and Gengar prefer churches and graveyards or floating around residential areas during the cover of night.

Grass

It will be no surprise to find out that Grass-type Pokémon spawn points are located in grassy areas, but those in the cities where there isn’t a lot of open space will find it a little bit harder to catch them.

Parks, forests, woodland, countrysides, golf courses and meadows are common locations for Grass-type Pokémon spawn points.

There are 12 Pokémon who fall into this type: Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, Venusaur, Oddish, Gloom, Vileplume, Bellsprout, Weepinbell, Victreebell, Exeggcute, Exeggutor, and Tangela.

Ground

While they share some characteristics with Rock-type Pokémon, these type of Pokémon prefers a bit more grass under their feet than their stone cousins.

Spawn point locations for Ground-type Pokémon include farmlands, parks, woodland, and quarries.

There are 8 ground Pokémon: Sandshrew, Sandslash, Diglett, Dugtrio,  Cubone, Marowak, Rhyhorn, and Rhydon.

Normal

Normal-type Pokémon spawn just about everywhere and are pretty easy to find (some easier to find that others). This group contains all the Pokémon you are sick of seeing.

Confirmed spawn points include residential areas, parking lots, schools, and colleges.

There are 22 Pokémon who fall into this type: Pidgey, Pidgeotto, Pidgeot, Rattata, Raticate, Spearow, Fearow, Jigglypuff, Wigglytuff, Meowth, Persian, Farfetch’d (regional), Doduo, Dodrio, Lickitung, Chansey, Kangaskhan (regional), Tauros (regional), Ditto (not available), Eevee, Porygon, and Snorlax.

Poison

Considered some of the best defenders in the Pokédex. There aren’t many pure poison ones, so it sometimes isn’t very easy to find them. However, a lot of poison Pokémon are also half another type so if you aren’t near any of their specific spawn location then you can also find them at their other types location.

Pure Poison-type Pokémon are commonly found around marshes and wetlands, and have been caught in industrial areas.

There are 14 Pokémon of this type: Ekans, Arbok, Nidoran (Female), Nidoran (Male), Nidorina, Nidoqueen, Nidorino, Nidoking, Zubat, Golbat, Grimer, Muk, Koffing, and Weezing.

Psychic

Some of the most sought after Pokémon are Psychic-types. This probably due to some of their attacks. Two of the best Pokémon in the first-generation fall into this group, but you won’t be able to collect them. They are Mew and Mewtwo and will probably be prizes in some special event in the future.

Psychic Pokémon reported come out at night-time in residential areas, but they can also be found near hospitals and in open grassy areas.

There are 9 Pokémon who fall under this type: Abra, Kadabra, Alakazam, Drowzee, Hypno, Slowpoke, Slowbrow, Jynx and Mr. Mime (regional).

Rock

These type of Pokémon share the same kind of spawn point locations as their Ground-type cousins so look for them in quarries, farmland, and cliffy beaches.

There are 9 Rock-type Pokémon: Geodude, Graveler, Golem, Onix, Omanyte, Omanstar, Kabuto, Kabutops, and Aerodactyl.

Water

As you’d expect, Water-type Pokémon are pretty common by the sea or lakes, but if you live inland, then there are still some places you might be able to catch one. You just have to use your head and have a real investigate of your area.

Confirmed spawn locations include the sea, rivers, lakes, fountains, constructed ponds, and wetland areas.

There are 28 Pokémon who fall into this type: Squirtle, Wartortle, Blastoise, Psyduck, Golduck, Poliwag, Poliwhirl, Poliwrath, Tentacool, Tentacruel, Slowpoke, Slowbro, Seel, Dewgong, Shellder, Cloyster, Krabby, Kingler, Horsea, Seadra, Goldeen, Seaking, Staryu, Starmie, Magikarp, Gyarados, Lapras and Vaporeon.

There is also one Pure Ice-type Pokémon in first-generation and that is this the last legendary bird to get a mention, Articuno (the symbol for Team Mystic). As with the other legendaries, Articuno is not yet available to be caught in the wild and will no doubt become available for special events etc.

So I hope that some of you find this guide useful. If you find a spawn point at a different location than stated here, please let me know by commenting below.
